Philosophy

The basic idea in the Montessori philosophy of education is that every child carries within him/her the adult that they will become. In order to develop their physical, intellectual abilities, they must have freedom; a freedom to be achieved through order and self-discipline.

The world around a child is full of sights, sounds that at first appear chaotic. A child must gradually create order and slowly but surely gain mastery of them.

Montessori practice helps children develop creativity, problem solving skills, critical thinking as well as time management skills to contribute to society and the environment.

History

The Montessori Principles:

According to Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952) learning is a natural, self-directed process which follows certain fundamental laws of nature.

Maria Montessori discovered that young children come into complete harmony with their environment: i.e. “normalize”, within a prepared environment and committed to such principles as (1) Observation; (2) Individual Liberty and (3) Preparation of The Environment.

The “normalization” she saw in children came from the adult’s commitment to these principles – and she discovered the child’s true nature with its spontaneous desire for goal- directed activities, serious intellectual development and a genuine thirst for knowledge and academic achievement.

These Montessori teachings seek to control the environment not the child, by observing and allowing children the freedom of choice in a prepared environment, to help students develop a more positive, self-disciplined habit of effort towards learning throughout life.

The Classroom

In Montessori classrooms the program is based on self-directed, non-competitive activities that encourage children to develop strong self-images and the confidence to face challenges and change with optimism.

The role of the teacher is one of a guide and observer as the children progress at their own pace. Each child is respected as a unique individual with their own personality that contributes to the classroom and their community.

The number and variety of manipulative materials that the MSA Montessori Preschool offers is very rare. Every corner of the classroom invites the children to explore and expand their capabilities. I am happy that my children have the opportunity to be part of such a complete program. I’ve noticed an improvement in speech, socialization, and self-confidence, especially because they are treated with respect and care. The best testimonial comes from my two kids who want to go to school even on weekends!!

Curriculum

The materials for development are arranged in a carefully prepared environment and are presented daily. These materials include:

  • Language
As part of our oral language development we include workbooks and journals. We encourage written expression, reading and being read to, as well as the elements of grammar and literature. We make use of Sandpaper Letters, as well as a full Phonics curriculum.
  • Practical Life
Our focus on the fine motor development is offered with inviting and purposeful activities like spooning, mixing, sorting as well as matching activities with this category.
  • Sensorial Development
To encourage children to describe senses through experiences such as sound, light, color, dimensions, as well as texture. We use Red Rods, Tactile Boards, smelling jars as well as The Pink Tower and The Broad Stairs for all sensorial experiences.
  • Mathematics
As part of our math program we use manipulatives to help each child to gain an understanding of number concepts, sequencing, worksheets, puzzles, number counters as well as the Number Rods and Sandpaper number cards.
  • Cultural Studies/Geography/History
Introduced monthly to experience the history of the earth, with a hands-on experience. The goal is to develop a global perspective. These are presented through a variety of manipulative activities.
  • Creative Arts, Music/Movement
Included in our daily activities through daily circles as well as through our daily free work period.

Testimonials

This is our 4th year at MSA Montessori Preschool and we cannot imagine entrusting our little preschoolers with anyone else! Ms Brenda and the other teachers always go above and beyond, giving personalized care and learning to each child.

The growth and preparedness for elementary school that I have seen in each of my children is amazing. But more importantly than that, my kids were always excited to go and have fun at school.

We have had great experiences with MSA Montessori Preschool, and will not hesitate to register our littlest when she is old enough! 🙂
